Finished Granny Square Quilt

Photo finishes to share today ...

A baby sized Granny Square Quilt

Surprisingly easy to make, and such a great way to use up leftoever fabrics. I just mixed them all up, and the result is this wonderful burst of colour...

I quilted this with a poly batting, so it has a nice fluffy, lofty feel to it. Bound with a solid aqua binding.

*happy*

Quilting Love ....

... is literally what I did while making this quilt.

See what I mean?

I had just the one fussy cut square of the word 'love', and I hid it in the middle of this patchwork quilt.

This one was made especially for a little girl born on 5 March, and I finished it just in time too! (And I just have to say what a cutie Baby Alia is!)

My inspiration came from this Stargazer print from Patty Young's Lush fabric line - pink and teal... mmmmmmm... I had a yard of it hiding in my shelves. Did I say it's mmmmmmmmm?

I was told that the new mummy really likes this little quilt. *happy*

It's Friday tomorrow, hip hip hurray! Have a great one all.

Previous Finishes

I've started a couple of new projects, and was about to share my progress here when I realised that I haven't posted some earlier finishes. So I thought I had better be a bit more organised and list them here first.

First up is a string table runner.

I didn't think much of it while I was making it - my focus then was just to use up some of the longer strips in my scrap bin. But I changed my mind pronto as soon as it was finished.

Now I really like it. Hip hip hooray for scrappy projects :-)

Then there's the blue coin quilt:

Baby sized, and is the blue version of a similar pink coin quilt I made a few months earlier.

I think I've said this before, but I'll say it again - coin quilts are the easiest! I highly recommend them if you're a beginner quilter or if you just need a quick finish.

I'm hoping this little quilt will find a new home soon.

Enjoy Sunday all, and have a great week ahead!

Custom Quilt

I made this a few weeks ago ... but am only able to share it now, after its been delivered.

This is for little Baby Husain...

His Mama contacted me saying her ideas for the quilt included red and blue (Husain's dad is a big Manchester United fan!), balls and dinosaurs (his first toy *cute*), and that Husain loves Baby Khalifah. Well, I couldn't do much about Baby Khalifah or the Red Devils, but I told her I could a quilt with red, blue, balls and dinosaurs.

And this is the end product:

Thank you Syamila and Baby Husain, I hope you like your quilt!

A Very Handsome Model

I got photos from Aric's mum of him in action with this quilt.

Isn't he handsome?

I just can't get over his two stuffed animals, lol!

Cuteness overload!

And more good news... tomorrow's Friday, huhu. Have a good one all :-)

Boy Patchwork

I was busy quilting  this weekend, and have a finish to share :-)

A patchwork quilt - suitable for a little boy.

Sorry about the bad photos... I took them late in the afternoon, when the lighting was tricky!

I was a little stumped for backing fabric for this one, and ended up piecing the back. Do you think it looks odd?

Also, I also did the binding differently, not hand sewn like my usual, but machine bound. It didn't all go smoothly as you can see...

But nothing that can't be fixed :-)

Wishing everyone a good week ahead!

Red & Aqua

Presenting my first ever red and aqua quilt!

I enjoyed every minute of making this one. Even the pressing the seams open bit, haha!

It's been a while since I've made triangles - quarter square or even half square triangles. I used this really easy tutorial from over at Cluck Cluck Sew , only I added a border. I seem to have a thing for borders, although for me it's really just a lazy way of making my quilts a little bit bigger, hehehe.

I did get a little bit more adventurous with the quilting though, and I tried out a flower design. It didn't start so easy (and there was a fair amount of unpicking involved!) but I found my groove in the end. It's not perfect, but I love it all the same, hee.

And a picture of the back...

*happy*

Here's wishing everyone a great week :-)

Red and Aqua

When I first became serious (well, serious-ish) about quilting, red and aqua colour combos were all the rage. I must have spent hours just ooh-ing and aaah-ing over beautiful red and aqua quilts all over the internet. Now years later I think it's about time I attempted my own red and aqua quilt.

So I took a peek at my stash (surprise, surprise, there're quite a few red and aquas there), then pulled some fabric off the shelves for a bit of auditioning and this is what I've settled on:

Ooh! That's a bit on the bright side isn't it? I called in Yummy Hubby for a second opinion and got a non-committal response. I suspect he thinks it's a bit bright too.

Milo didn't seem to mind though, ehehee.

You know what? I think I'm going to go for it. I've also got a pattern in mind. Wish me luck!

28 July 2013

Whoops...

... it's almost the end of the month and no post :-(

So I'm making it a point to say hello - HELLO! - I figured one post a month is better than none...

Real life has kinda caught up with me this July: been working late (and really hard!) to close off a couple of projects at work... also it's Ramadhan, so my sewing time has been limited sadly.

But, there have been visits to the sewing room... and I've finished my Meadow Friends Boy Quilt!

I have to say, I was really glad to get this one done - it's been a looong time coming. I think the scrappy binding turned out great :-)

Then I had to make more coasters for an order - I guess someone out there really likes fabric coasters :-)

I even made some tags for them. Made me feel all professional like ehehee.

And on those nights where creativity escaped me I just played with my scraps and improved/added to my scrappy log cabin blocks. I decided I wanted them bigger (10" squares). I'm working towards 16 blocks to start with - that would give me a square baby quilt - but I wouldn't be surprised if I change my mind and make more. Only time (and my scrap bin) can tell.

So that's my sewing activities for the past month - not much at all, but enough to keep me happy :)

Finally I've been toying with the idea for a new quilt. A red and aqua one, I've never made it before. Hmm.... yes, I think I'll stop thinking about it and go see if I have enough red and aqua in my stash!

Hope everyone's having a great weekend. For those observing Ramadhan, Selamat berpuasa!

Low Volume Finish

Phew! Is anyone else glad those elections are over? I'm just grateful things went (relatively) smoothly and a new day dawns peacefully with promise of hope. With all the turmoil we hear about around the globe these days, I hope we never forget to count the little blessings. We don't like extreme views and actions here at A Fabric Case. Except if it involves fabric, of course, ehehee.

Right, so that's my little lecture done (a sure sign of getting along in years, sigh) we can now move on to more exciting things. Like my first finish for May. MAY, can you believe it - where has the year gone???

Our camera has decided to stop fooling around, so I as able to take lots of happy photos. Here's a shot from the right:

Another shot from the left:

And one from a bit further away:

After my experience with straight line quilting in my last couple of quilts, I took great care when basting this one - made sure everything was nice and flat and taut etc. It DID pay off in the end - my puckers and distortions reduced significantly, but I have to admit there was also a fair amount of coaxing and cajoling (and upper arm muscle!) involved.  The only thing I didn't do was sing to it. Perhaps I'll try that next time, eehee.

And I have to show you this backing fabric. I've had it for a couple of years now but I can still remember that it's from Moda's Kashmir collection - because it's soooo pretty in real life.

I bound the quilt with a solid - Bella solid in Mist. One of my favourites. The aqua is so fresh and I think it matches the quilt's overall look.

I've named this quilt The Quiet One. Suits it perfectly, don't you think?

26 April 2013

Where's the Dino?

It's actually been a productive week  on the sewing front. But our camera's gone funny, and what's a post without a photo right? But then again, what's a blog without a post? Then I had a brainwave - there's a camera on my phone! Honestly, I can be such a duuuh sometimes.

So here's a finish to share - a patchwork quilt.

I really like the colour play on this one. And really, really heart this dino print - so cute!

I quilted this one in the ditch - and had a few problems. Am I the only one whose layers shift whenever they straight line quilt??

Thankfully after a wash and dry it seems to have evened itself out. But I'm still hoping that I'm the only one who will notice the distortions.

While I'm here, I'd better share an earlier finish. You'd seen this quilt before, just without the binding.

This one was free-motioned quilted, hee! (Sorry about the camera phone quality!)

I finally got my binding fabric, and got that sewn on. In the end I went with the same fabric as the back, which is from the same Windsor Lane line.

So that's another one to add to the basket:

Oh, and before I forget, I still have one extra Windsor Lane charm pack, up for sale. Just drop me a comment or an email if you'd like to have it.

Well, I must say this isn't too shabby for someone with a sulky camera now, isit? heheee

Have a happy weekend, everyone. And happy sewing!

And Then There Were Two

Two finishes this time - two!

They're both tiny though, baby sizes:

The first one was really simple - I used a panel, so no piecing! It was just a matter of layering, basting, quilting and binding.

I really, really liked making this one - because I always have fun stippling :-)

Yummy Hubby thinks it's a little boring, as all it is is a panel, but I love it all the same. Such cute safari animals...

In the photo above you can see the stippling a bit more clearly (I hope). And I'm happy to report that there's not a pucker in sight, hu hu! (Tip - always baste properly!!!)

Even the backing fabric is so cute...

Hmmm... can someone tell me please how to keep a kitty off a quilt?

It seems every time I lay down a quilt a kitty will come along and try to claim it...

The second quilt is a girly patchwork quilt.

If you've been following my blog recently you'll notice that patchwork quilts are fast becoming a favourite. This one's not so scrappy though - I used about 10 different prints, but threw in the odd matching square here and there. I only just finished this one this last weekend. It was made in a bit of a rush, for a neighbour who just welcomed their first grandchild a few days ago. As a personal touch I machine embroidered the little one's name in the corner:

I haven't had a chance to pop over next door yet, the poor thing's got jaundice now, so she's still in the hospital :-(

Hope everyone has a good week ahead!
