Low Volume (and Taxes)

I'm taking full advantage of my sewing mojo, and have started another quilt! Is that madness?

I've been inspired by all the beautiful low volume quilts that's been cropping up all over the place, like here and here. I love the quiet subtleness of these quilts, so just had to try make my own. 

I must admit, I'm being very good at cutting into my stash lately. It's getting easier and easier to use up bits of the fabric I've been hoarding. But of course there're still some prints which I just. Can't. Bear. To cut up. 

Anyway, I'm going for ANOTHER patchwork quilt. and have chain-sewn a tall pile of low volume squares together.

Ready for the next step - rows!

In other news, if you haven't declared your taxes yet - do it NOW! You still have a few (short) hours to do so. One year I was 2 weeks late filing, and suffice to say that I'm still lamenting the MILES of fabric I could have bought with the penalty I had to pay :-(

Where's the Dino?

It's actually been a productive week  on the sewing front. But our camera's gone funny, and what's a post without a photo right? But then again, what's a blog without a post? Then I had a brainwave - there's a camera on my phone! Honestly, I can be such a duuuh sometimes.

So here's a finish to share - a patchwork quilt.

I really like the colour play on this one. And really, really heart this dino print - so cute!

I quilted this one in the ditch - and had a few problems. Am I the only one whose layers shift whenever they straight line quilt??

Thankfully after a wash and dry it seems to have evened itself out. But I'm still hoping that I'm the only one who will notice the distortions.

While I'm here, I'd better share an earlier finish. You'd seen this quilt before, just without the binding. 

This one was free-motioned quilted, hee! (Sorry about the camera phone quality!)

I finally got my binding fabric, and got that sewn on. In the end I went with the same fabric as the back, which is from the same Windsor Lane line.

So that's another one to add to the basket:

What a week it's been! It's one of those weeks where I have had to keep reminding myself that a paycheck = lots of potential fabric hoarding purchases, haha!

Was away traveling - for work (*arrgh*) - so could NOT put my sewing mojo to good use.

Somehow (how???) managed to steal some time to sew some patchwork rows...

... to add to my pile of UFO's, ehehehe.

Also, a restock of pins!!!

New pincushion :-)

Looking forward to lots of hours at my sewing machine. But for now, a much needed rest.

More Patchwork!

Because I just couldn't resist.

Cut up a selection of fabric into 120, 4.5 inch squares...

Separated them into piles of light and dark ...

Then, chain piecing!

Fabulosity!

Distortion!

I might have been a little too optimistic about my Windsor Lane baby quilt.  The quilt top came together easily enough, but the quilting wasn't so smooth sailing.

I had wanted to quilt it in a simple cross hatch, but after the first few lines of quilting on the diagonal, the fabric at the top just got too distorted. 

You can't really see it in the photo, but trust me, it WAS wonky.

I'm not even going to go into the puckers. And no, I don't think I'm being a control freak.

I guess this confirms it - I'm terrible at straight line quilting.

And so. There was nothing left for it but to unpick and start again (it just occurred to me that I'm doing a fair bit of unpicking these days. Eeek!). Once that was done I screwed on my darning foot and free motioned the whole thing. And guess what? The quilting took less time than the unpicking!

Anyway, here it is, in all its quilted glory:

I still need to find some binding for it though - nothing in my stash seems to fit :-(  Hope to share a finish soon!
